The North and South Meet in Boat Building

This is the remarkable story of a businessman in Jaffna who, seeing the need in his community for fishing boats, has gone in to a joint venture with a businessman in the South (Beruwela) to meet this need. Twelve youths from the South, who have the expertise in boat-building, have been taken to Jaffna and are residing there to train youth from Jaffna in this industry.

Mr. K Poornachandran, who is managing this project in Jaffna, says that the demand for boats of this nature is very high in the North. This training exercise has given these youth employment in a very profitable industry. At present, a boat is released for sale every three days.

Boats manufactured through a collaboration between Star Industrial
Services Pvt Ltd, Jaffna, and Ceyline Engineering Co Ltd, Beruwala.
