STATEMENT BY THE EU PRESIDENCY ON THE TOKYO CONFERENCE.

Statement
28 May 2003

As the Tokyo conference on Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka approaches, the EU is concerned about the continued suspension by LTTE of its participation in the Peace Process and in particular about its intention – in the present circumstances – not to participate in the Conference.

In its role as co-chair of the Tokyo Conference, the EU is following very closely the ongoing discussions between the GoSL and the LTTE. The EU strongly encourages the GoSL and LTTE to show the necessary flexibility to find a solution which will allow both parties to participate in the Tokyo Conference on 9 and 10 June. This conference offers a unique opportunity for the people of Sri Lanka, together with the international community, to proceed along the road towards peace and development on which they successfully embarked more than a year ago.

The EU looks forward to the opportunity to be an active partner in the follow up to the Tokyo Conference.

The joint participation of the GoSL and LTTE in the Tokyo Conference would provide a very opportune occasion to begin such discussions.
