Following the
inaugural meeting of the National Advisory Council
for Peace and Reconciliation on 4th October, 2004,
the first meeting of the Civil Society Committee was
held on 4th November 2004 at the BMICH. It was chaired
by Dr. A.T.Ariyaratna, the Sarvodaya leader in Sri
Lanka.
After discussion the Chairperson appointed three sub-committees
to study in depth how the committee could serve as a forum for its members to
inform the government of their views and concerns with regard to the Peace Process
and to suggest approaches to move the Peace Process forward to pave the way
for a durable peace.
The sub-committees are:
1. Prevention of War and Violence,
Strengthening the Cease-Fire Agreement, and Political
and Constitutional Reform
for Peace and Reconciliation.
2. Humanitarian and Developmental
Issues, Human Rights and Transitional Justice for
Peace and Reconciliation.
3. Communication and Social Mobilization for Consensus Building,
Peace and Reconciliation.
These sub-committees will meet regularly and bring their views
and findings to the main committee for further deliberation.
