SUPPORT MEETING - SRI LANKA PEACE PROCESS

On Monday 25 November, the Foreign Ministry of Norway will hold a Support Meeting for the Sri Lanka peace process. The meeting is arranged in consultation with the parties and is a part of Norway's efforts to facilitate the peace process.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Petersen plans to open the meeting. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will participate in the meeting, as will the chief peace negotiator of the LTTE, Anton Balasingham, and the chief peace negotiator of the Sri Lankan Government, G.L. Peiris. Participants include U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, UK Secretary of State for International Development Claire Short, and EU Commissioner Margot Wallstrøm. High-level participants also will attend from a number of other countries, including Japan, Germany, Sweden and Denmark (EU Presidency).

The Support Meeting will take place at Holmenkollen Park Hotell Rica in Oslo from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on 25 November. Accredited members of the press will be invited to cover the opening of the meeting and will be admitted at 9:00 AM to receive their accreditation and mount technical equipment. At the closing of the meeting (approximately 6:00 PM), a press conference will be held.

A week later, from 2 - 5 December, the third session of the peace negotiations between the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka will be held in Oslo. Information for the press on that arrangement will follow during the week of 18 November (Week 47).
