SCOPP DIRECTOR IN JAFFNA

23 December 2004

Dr. Lakshman Marasinghe, Director Legal of SCOPP was invited to visit Jaffna recently by the Viluthu Human Resource Development Centre to participate in a Panel Discussion on the 'The future of peace activities.' It was held at the Navalar Hall and was attended by a large gathering from many- political, professional and business communities.

The meeting was followed by a Musical Street Drama on the ethnic problems and related changes titled 'Othukkathi Othukkan.' During the meeting the audience raised many issues related to the peace process. The wide ranging discussion included the following issues:

*  Southern attitude to the ISGA
*  Why do the Southerners object to the ISGA
*  The importance and relevance of the Oslo decision.
*  The importance and relevance if any, of Federalism to the     Peace  Process.
*  The development perspectives of the North and East.

The meeting which began at 4.00 pm ended well after 6.30. It perhaps laid the foundation for the commencement of a North-South dialogue concerning matters which are of critical importance to the peace process.
