NORTH EAST CONTINUES TO RECEIVE TSUNAMI RELIEF

The immediate requirements of the victims of Tsunami-hit Northern and Eastern Districts are safe drinking water and medicine. University students and people of the area and Sri Lankan military and police personnel have queued up to donate blood since Sunday. Blood has been an urgent requirement to save lives of casualties. Ambulances and Doctors from Colombo were dispatched on the 26th to the Vavuniya General Hospital.

Since Sunday's tragedy Vavuniya Government Agent K. Ganesh has been meeting officials to assess the damage to life and property and the immediate requirements of people displaced by the tidal waves.

International and local volunteer organizations are now working with Government officials and members of the LTTE's political wing to distribute relief supplies. The Rehabilitation Ministry has sent several loads of tents and bottled drinking water to the North. It has been estimated that over 350,000 persons would need assistance and food for at least the next 15 days. The requirement for the period would be 2,000 MTs of rice, 320 MTs of Dhal and 160 MTs of Sugar. Food stocks already available in the province have been assessed.

2,000 MTs of sugar and 195 MTs of dhal have been dispatched for distribution among the victims in the five districts in the North and East Provinces.

Jaffna District :              1,400 MTs of sugar and 130 MTs of Dhal
Mullativu District :         205 MTs of sugar and 25 MTs of Dhal
Kilinochchi District :     210 MTs of sugar and 30 MTs of Dhal
Mannar District :           78 MTs of sugar and 08 MTs of Dhal
Vavunia District :           46 MTs of sugar and 02 MTs of Dhal.

The Rehab Ministry has granted approval for regional government officers to purchase rice from areas close to affected districts. Additional supplies of from Colombo will sent by road this week. The UNHCR, UNICEF and ICRC are now assisting the authorities in the relief efforts.
