The Government of Sri Lanka strongly condemns
the killings that have taken place recently in the
East and in Colombo. These killings, along with
other incidents of violence, such as abductions,
forcible recruitment and the recruitment of child
soldiers, threaten the ceasefire agreement, and
undermine the prospects for peace negotiations to
commence. Moreover, these incidents are all clear
violations of international human rights norms accepted
by the international community.
The Government of Sri Lanka is also deeply concerned
that killings continue to be used to deal with political
differences, in a context when all communities in
the country and the international community have
re-iterated their call for political dialogue and
peace negotiations.
The Government of Sri Lanka undertakes to fully
investigate all such killings, irrespective of the
factional identities of the victims and ensure that
the law of the land is applied devoid of any discrimination.
