1. The Government of Japan expresses its apprehension over the current developments in Sri Lanka including the issuing of the state of emergency. The Government of Japan urges all the parties concerned to work together, respecting the functions of the democratic institutions in a constructive and practical manner.
2. The Government of Japan has been contributing to the peace process of Sri Lanka, based on the "Consolidation of Peace Initiative", through such efforts as hosting the Tokyo Conference on the Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka in June 2003 and subsequent follow-ups. The Government of Japan is of the view that the progress of peace process should not be hindered by the recent developments, and expresses its fervent hope that the current situation in Colombo will be settled swiftly and harmoniously, and that the peace talks will be resumed as the earliest possible date.
