Appointment of a Representative of the Government of Japan for Sri Lanka

At the cabinet meeting on October 25, the Government of Japan appointed Mr Yasushi Akashi, former Undersecretary General of the United Nations, as a Representative of the Government of Japan, with a view to contributing for peace-building, rehabilitation and reconstruction in Sri Lanka.

Peace-building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction are the major issues in Sri Lanka, where peace talks were started in September this year. Representing the Government of Japan, Mr Akashi will contribute to the progress of Peace-building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction process.

Mr Akashi will visit Sri Lanka as early as the beginning of November to see the situation for himself and exchange views with the parties concerned including officials of the Government of Sri Lanka.
