INAUGURATION OF THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL ON PEACE AND RECONCILIATION

The inauguration of the National Advisory Council on Peace and Reconciliation (NAC) will be convened by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Monday 4th October 2004.

All political parties represented in Parliament, religious dignitaries and cross sections of Civil Society have been invited to participate.

The NAC will be a broad-based national forum that will provide a means for the people of this country to contribute towards a political settlement and work towards reconciliation. The NAC will comprise three standing committees namely, a political, religious and civil society which is expected to consult, so as to ascertain the widest possible spectrum of views on how to bring about a negotiated political settlement and peace with dignity and democracy.

The NAC will also serve as a forum for explaining to the country, the Government’s efforts to bring Peace, briefing the country on the progress of Peace negotiations, obtaining the views of all concerned parties and groups as well as promoting reconciliation and understanding among the different communities.

Through the NAC a continuous dialogue will be established with all political leaders of the various communities and groups represented in parliament, with the objective of keeping the country informed of the progress of Peace talks on the one hand and conveying to the LTTE the views of all concerned parties.
