Media Release
21 June 2005

President Chandrika Kumaratunga received the Deputy Foreign Minister of Norway, Vidar Helgesen, at the President’s House on Tuesday, 21st June 2005.

The President expressed her strong commitment to proceed with the proposed Post-Tsunami Operations Management Structure (P-TOMS) or the Tsunami Relief Council and briefed Mr. Helgesen on her consultations with political parties, religious leaders and civil society on the P-TOMS. Mr. Helgesen expressed Norway’s support for her efforts.

The President informed Mr. Helgesen of concerns expressed by Muslim parties and their aspirations to be an equal party and a signatory to the agreement. Mr. Helgesen agreed to convey these concerns to the LTTE on his visit to Kilinochchi.

Both the President and Mr. Helgesen agreed that the signing and implementation of the P-TOMS would be a positive confidence building measure between the LTTE and the GOSL.

The discussion also focused on the current status of the ceasefire and the need to review its implementation in due course. The President unreservedly condemned the spate of political killings in recent months by the LTTE, especially of security forces personnel.

Mr. Helgesen was accompanied by the Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskar and other Norwegian officials. Secretary General of the Peace Secretariat, Jayantha Dhanapala, Foreign Secretary, H. M. G. S. Palihakkara, Director General Ministry of RRR, Harim Peiris were among those present at the discussion.
