Lt. Col T.R. Meedin, Grade One Staff Officer of the Military Intelligence Corps, was killed in the early hours of Sunday morning by gunmen near his residence at Kiribathgoda. The killing is another in a series of targeted assassinations of key intelligence officers, which the government strongly condemns.
Since the commencement of the Ceasefire in 2002, the intelligence units of the Security Forces and Police have lost 17 officers killed by targeted assassinations. The assassination of Lt. Col. Meedin is being investigated and those found guilty will be brought to justice.
The GOSL reiterates the need for an urgent review of the implementation of the CFA with a view to prevent further killings and regrets that the recent efforts of Major Gen. (Rtd) Trond Furuhovde towards this end were not productive.
