VISIT OF DEPUTY MINISTER VIDAR HELGESEN AND SPECIAL ADVISER ERIK SOLHEIM 17-19 SEPTEMBER 2003

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vidar Helgesen and Special Advisor Erik Solheim will make a routine visit to Sri Lanka from 17 to 19 September.

During their two days visit they will meet with H.E. President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the leader of LTTE`s political wing, Mr. Tamilselvan.

Mr. Helgesen and Mr. Solheim will in their meetings have general discussions with the parties on the present situation. This will include the question of a possible resumption of direct talks between the parties, a discussion on how to ensure progress in the humanitarian and rehabilitation work in the war affected areas and also how best to ensure that the economic benefits of the peace process reach people in all parts of the country.

Mr. Helgesen and Mr. Solheim are also scheduled to meet, among others, SLMC, the donor community, SLMM, EPDP, PLOTE and representatives of civil society.
