Talks in Kilinochchi on reconstruction and development of the North- East

Director General of the Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process, Mr Bernard Goonatillake, met LTTE Political Wing Leader, Mr S. P. Tamil Chelvam on August 26th in Kilinochchi. The meeting focused on the development of the North- East. Mr Azeez, Deputy Director, SCOPP, and representatives from the National Development Bank, Japan Bank for International Co-operation and the Janasaviya Trust |

who were also on a fact-finding mission on the socio-economic situation in the region, also participated at this meeting.

The discussions dealt with the initial reconstruction of the war-torn region and normalization of civilian life, which will be among the key issues at the formal talks in Thailand. Reconstruction of the road network, irrigation projects and the rejuvenation of agriculture and fisheries in the region were discussed at the meeting which lasted two and a half hours.
After the talks, the Delegation visited Iramadu, where the Agriculture Faculty of the Jaffna University was located before it was shifted to Jaffna in 1996
