SCOPP HEAD VISITS AMPARA

22 December 2004

Jayantha Dhanapala Secretary General of the Peace Secretariat (SCOPP) and Senior Advisor to the President visited Ampara on Wednesday 22nd December in pursuance of a policy of visiting the six district offices of the SLMM for the purpose of ensuring the smooth implementation of the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA).

Mr. Dhanapala held discussions with Mr. Raimo Rastas, Head of the SLMM, Ampara District and the local representatives on the Committee, reviewing statistics for complaints and violations which reveal that Ampara is one of the districts with a low number of ruled violations against GOSL as well as the LTTE. He complimented the committee on the cooperative atmosphere prevailing among the members and their practice of conflict resolution and peace building with a view to reducing the number of ceasefire violations.

In the afternoon Mr. Dhanapala met with Mr. Herath Abeyweera, GA for the Ampara District and civil society representatives. He briefed them on the current situation in the Peace Process and was informed by them of the developments in the district and the concerns of civil society in the area.

Earlier in the day the SCOPP Head received detailed briefings from personnel from the Security Forces and the Police.
