The maternity ward and the general ward of the Kilinochchi District Hospital, which were rehabilitated by the Government of Japan at a cost of Rs.50 million was handed over yesterday. Mr. Akio Suda, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka was the chief guest.
The project has been implemented by JICA’s (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Urgent Rehabilitation Support Program for the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
The rehabilitation of the Kilinochchi District Hospital was identified as an urgent necessity of the people in the area by a study mission sent by Japan to identify the urgent needs of the people in the Northern and Eastern Provinces in line with the strong commitment made by the Government of Japan for the rehabilitation and development of Sri Lanka.
With the opening of the newly constructed facilities of the Kilinochchi District Hospital, over 142,000 people in the Kilinochchi District including 65,000 people in the Kilinochchi town will benefit and have easier access to an efficient medical health facility.
The project included the re-construction of a maternity ward and a general ward, construction of six units of staff quarters, procurement and installment of utilities, equipment and furniture.
