SCOPP (Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process) reiterated its commitment to addressing the concerns of Muslim IDPs in a recent meeting with a delegation led by Rishad Badiuddin, Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services.
The Minister in particular raised questions regarding Muslims forcibly evicted by the LTTE from the Jaffna Peninsula and currently living in the Puttalam District. He also informed SCOPP officials of an intention to open a ‘Peace Secretariat’ for Northern Muslims in order to bring attention to resettlement issues as well as the economic, political, social and educational needs of these people who have spent almost 20 years uprooted from their homes.
SCOPP officials expressed the view that while it may not be necessary to have yet another Muslim entity devoted to peace, it will nevertheless offer all assistance to Muslims from the North, in accordance with SCOPP’s mandated commitment to address all such issues regardless of the ethnicity or other identity of the aggrieved.
