Iceland to Increase its Presence in SLMM

Statement by the Government of Iceland
18 August 2006

The Icelandic Government has decided to increase its presence in the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM). Up to 10 Icelanders will be members of the SLMM.

This decision is made in view of the withdrawal of monitors from the three Nordic European Union countries by the end of August 2006. In line with the Ceasefire Agreement of February 2002, the SLMM was to consist of 57 monitors from the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Only monitors from Iceland and Norway remain.
