The Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP) and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) held their regular weekly meeting in which an official of the Muslim Peace Secretariat participated.
SLMM informed SCOPP that it has re-established its Local Monitoring Meetings and already held meetings in all districts. SLMM and SCOPP agreed that re-establishing the meetings was an important step forward in SLMM’s monitoring activities and enhanced information sharing by both parties.
SLMM informed SCOPP that it had met with Local Monitoring Committee members and reported that the meetings were both constructive and informative.
SCOPP informed SLMM that it had received complaints from various groups about abductions which SCOPP said the groups claimed were being ignored by SLMM. SLMM responded that it had inquired into the complaints but added that it did not have the capacity to respond to all individual complaints.
SLMM asked SCOPP about shelling in two areas by Sri Lankan Armed Forces which it said were close to a hospital and a school. SCOPP stated that SLAF actions were directed strictly at military targets and that actions are carried with extreme care and precision and in accordance with standard operating procedures aimed at preventing civilian casualties.
The Muslim Peace Secretariat’s representative announced that his organization will soon name its representatives from the six districts whose job will be to coordinate with the SLMM on issues concerning the Muslim communities in the region.
