The SLMM in a recent ruling relating to the gruesome killing of a family in Vankalai on 8 June 2006, states that from all inquiries and interviews conducted with witnesses, local authorities and the civilian population, the findings obtained have proved to be highly inconclusive and contradictory and it is totally impossible to lay the blame on the GOSL for this senseless act.
The LTTE in a global campaign to discredit the GOSL used the images of this barbaric act as a propaganda tool. Initially these photographs were published on TamilNet on 9 June. Subsequently it was used in LTTE posters and placards in demonstrations held by LTTE front organisations in major Western capitals in an effort to mislead the international community. The same photographs were distributed to all Ambassadors of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva by a LTTE front organisation to defame the GOSL.
The LTTE propaganda machinery constantly disseminates false information by using gruesome visuals to maliciously implicate the Sri Lankan Security Forces. On most occasions such disinformation has not stood the test of intense scrutiny.
