The offices of three International NGOs engaged in the spheres of peace-building and relief assistance; the Non-Violent Peace Force, ZOA, a Dutch agency and an Italian relief organization, Intersos, came under grenade attacks in Muttur, Trincomalee on Sunday, 21st May 2006. In these coordinated attacks, one Serbian national and two locals were injured.
During the two decade long conflict and in the Tsunami recovery, the role of international and national humanitarian agencies in general have been essential in ensuring a supportive role to the State in providing basic amenities, welfare measures, relief and rehabilitation to people affected by the conflict and Tsunami.
In this context, the grenade attacks on the offices of the International NGOs can only be seen as an attack on humanity, as well as an orchestrated ploy to drive terror amongst NGO volunteers and employees, as well as the beneficiaries and local communities. Only those whose goals are not the welfare of the people could be behind such wanton attacks. This act of terror by the perpetrators should not go unpunished.
