One of the most sensible actions of Mrs. Kumaratunge was the creation of the Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP); specifically it was the appointment of Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala to head the SCOPP- that too by his own decision to act pro bono. Dr. Dhanapala is the only true Lankan patriot I have known; there may be others. I have known him for nearly 50 years. He is a nationalist without being a racist or being anti-Tamil.In the 1960s when I was with him at Jayqtilake Hall, University of Ceylon, I found intimacy with him of more value than the degree .
